The difference

NVMe, full root, KVM, one IPv4 and a /64, the same images, the same panel, the same flat renewal. The line is not a better machine — it is a machine with a promise about its cores.

No steal time

Nothing else is scheduled on your cores, so the hypervisor never makes your process wait for one. On a shared plan that wait is small and occasional; it is also the thing that turns a nine-minute build into a nineteen-minute one on a bad afternoon.

Predictable, not generous

You get the cores on the plan and never more. A shared plan can occasionally exceed its nominal share when the host is quiet — and occasionally fall below it. Pick this line when you would rather know than be lucky.

Worth it above roughly half a core, all day

The rough test: if your average core utilisation over a day is under about 50%, the shared line will serve you and cost a fraction of this. Above it — and especially if the work arrives in long, hot bursts — the cheaper plan is the one that costs you, in engineers waiting for builds.

Still a virtual machine

The cores are yours; the host, its memory bus and its network card are still shared infrastructure. If you need the whole physical box, that is a dedicated server, not this.

What exactly is dedicated about it?
The physical cores your machine runs on are allocated to your machine and nothing else is scheduled on them. On a shared-vCPU plan the same core is time-sliced between tenants: fine when everyone is idle, visible when someone is not. Here there is no one else to be visible.
Will my site be faster on this line?
Almost certainly not. A website spends its time waiting for the network and the database, not for a core, so moving it here changes nothing you can measure and multiplies the bill. This line is for work that pins a core: builds, encodes, simulations, game servers, anything where the wall-clock time of a busy job is the number you care about.
How do I know whether my workload needs it?
Run it on a Standard plan for a week and look at steal time — `top` reports it as `st`. Consistently above a few percent while your job runs means you are waiting for a core somebody else is using, and this line removes that. Near zero means you would be paying for a problem you do not have.
Is it the same hardware as a dedicated server?
No, and the distinction matters. This is a virtual machine whose cores are reserved; a dedicated server is the whole physical box, including its memory bus, its disks and its network card, with no hypervisor between you and them. Dedicated servers start higher and take longer to deliver. If you want the whole machine, that is a different page.
Can I burst above my core count?
No. You get exactly the cores on the plan, all of the time. That is the point of the line: predictable rather than generous. Shared-vCPU plans are the ones that can occasionally do better than their nominal share, and occasionally worse.
