It is a disk, not a share
The volume appears as a block device on your server. Put ext4, xfs, ZFS or LVM on it, mount it where you want, and treat it exactly as you would a physical disk — because as far as your kernel is concerned, it is one.
Grows when the data does
Volumes can be enlarged without rebuilding the server, which is the entire reason to keep bulk data off the boot disk. Shrinking is not possible — size up in steps you are comfortable paying for.
Detachable
A volume can be moved to another server in the same city. If a machine has to be rebuilt, the data does not have to go with it, which is a very different afternoon from restoring a backup.
Honesty
When you should not buy this.
If you just need a little more room, a larger server is usually cheaper than a small volume plus the server you already have — compare both before ordering. If you need the same files on several servers at once, this is the wrong shape: a volume attaches to one machine at a time. And if what you want is somewhere to throw backups, object storage costs less per gigabyte and is designed for exactly that.
