A note on pairing with a cloud VPS. Private networking on the virtual platform works between your own instances inside one region. A dedicated server is a separate product in a country, not a region, so traffic between the two crosses the public internet, and the outbound side counts against the VPS allowance where its line has one. Plan the topology with that in mind.

How is this different from a large cloud instance?

You get the whole physical machine: no hypervisor of ours between you and the hardware, no other tenants, and no oversubscription. What you give up is the platform's conveniences — provisioning in about a minute, resizing from a panel, snapshots, and a choice of regions the hardware cannot match. Metal is usually cheaper per core and per gigabyte; the virtual platform is cheaper to change your mind about.

Why is there a setup fee?

Because a physical build is real work that happens once: racking or reassigning the machine, populating it and installing the first operating system. It appears on the first invoice and never again, it is the same whether you keep the server for a month or five years, and it is not refundable. We would rather charge it visibly than fold it into a monthly price you pay forever.

How long does delivery take?

Within one business day of the order clearing, on every machine in the line-up. If stock in the country you asked for cannot meet that, we tell you before taking the money rather than after.

What does “unmetered” mean here?

An uplink with no monthly transfer allowance to count against — 1 Gbit on the European machines, 0.5 or 1 Gbit on the US ones, printed per machine. Most cloud VPS plans meter transfer with a stated allowance in terabytes; the Unmetered VPS line is the exception and carries the same no-allowance arrangement as this hardware. If your workload is bytes-out heavy, this is often the single biggest reason to choose metal.

Do you publish IOPS for the drives?

No. We have not measured these drives under conditions you could reproduce, and a supplier's headline figure would not survive contact with your workload. You get the drive type, the count and the capacity, which are facts, rather than a performance number that is really a marketing artefact.

Can I have the drives mirrored?

Yes, if you say so before the build. Two devices set up as a mirror halve the usable capacity and survive one drive failing; left separate you get the full capacity and no redundancy. Undoing that choice later means a reinstall, which is why it is decided with you up front.

Is it managed?

No. Dedicated servers are self-managed: the operating system, patching and your application are yours. We answer questions about the hardware, the network and billing. If you want the operating system looked after, that is the managed product, and it is not sold on this hardware.
