The number that matters

Sorted by cost per terabyte, which is not the same as cheapest.

Every other page here sorts by price. On a storage line that ordering hides the argument, so this one divides the monthly price by the disk and sorts by the result.

Best value in the line right now is BD-12 at $84.50 per terabyte a month. Figures are computed from the live catalogue, so this ordering changes when supplier pricing does. If cost per terabyte is the only thing you are optimising, a whole storage machine beats every row here — this line is for when you want a cloud server that happens to have a large disk, not a machine that is only a disk.

What you are buying

A server whose disk is the product.

Everything else about it is ordinary: root, KVM, the same images, the same panel. The shape is the difference.

Disk first, cores second

The cores are shared and there are enough of them to move bytes on and off the disk. That is the trade: you are not paying for compute you would not use, which is what makes the per-terabyte figure above possible.

Allowances from 4 TB to 32 TB a month

Generous rather than absent, and larger on the larger machines — each plan’s own figure is in the table below. A nightly backup target will not approach it. If you want no meter at all, the Unmetered line is the product for that, at a different disk-per-dollar ratio.

Built to order, not instant

Provisioned within one business day of payment clearing. These are not machines that appear in sixty seconds, and pretending otherwise would make the first day unpleasant.

Not a database box

Shared cores and a capacity-optimised platform are the wrong end of the market for a write-heavy database. Keep the query engine on reserved cores and the bulk data here.

Questions

Before you point a backup job at one.

Is the disk really NVMe, or is it spinning rust behind a fast label?
NVMe. What we do not claim is a layout: these plans run on a supplier's platform whose storage topology is not published, so the spec says NVMe and stops there rather than describing an attachment we have not verified. If your workload depends on knowing that, ask before ordering.
What are these actually good for?
Holding things. Backup targets, media libraries, archives, package mirrors, a Nextcloud or a Seafile, the receiving end of a nightly rsync. Anything where the disk is the point and the CPU is there to move bytes on and off it.
What are they bad for?
Databases with a demanding write pattern, and anything latency-sensitive. The cores are shared and the platform is optimised for capacity rather than for the tail of a latency distribution. If a query time is the number you watch, buy the Dedicated CPU line and keep the bulk data here.
How much traffic do they include?
Every size carries a monthly allowance, and the larger the machine the larger the allowance — the table on this page shows each one. They are generous enough that a backup target will not come near them, but they are allowances rather than an absence of one. If you want no meter at all, the Unmetered line is the product for that, at a different disk-per-dollar ratio.
Can I use one as a second disk for a server I already have?
You can mount it over the network from another machine, and plenty of people do. It is a full server with root, not a block device we attach to something else — if what you want is a volume that plugs into an existing VPS, that is block storage and a different product.
