Keep a bot alive

Three habits that keep a process up.

Scheduled task at startup

Task Scheduler, trigger At startup, run whether the user is logged on or not. The bot comes back after a Windows Update reboot without anyone signing in.

No sleep on a server

Windows Server does not sleep, so nothing to switch off there. What ends a bot is signing out of Remote Desktop: close the window instead.

A watchdog

A second scheduled task every few minutes that starts the bot if it is not running costs nothing and turns a crash into a blip. Log to a file, not the console, so you can see why.

Before you host a bot on Windows.

How big a machine does a bot need?

Small, unless it drives a browser. A bot written in Python, Node or C# idles at a few hundred megabytes; 2 vCPU and 4 GB (Starter, from $13.90 a month) runs one or two of them beside Windows itself. A bot that automates a browser is a different animal: each Chrome or Edge window wants memory of its own, and several of them belong on 4 vCPU and 8 GB (Trader, from $31.90).

Does the bot keep running when I disconnect?

Yes, if you close the Remote Desktop window rather than signing out. Signing out ends the session and everything in it. For a bot that must survive a reboot, run it as a scheduled task at startup or as a Windows service, so it comes back without anyone signing in.

Why Windows rather than Linux for a bot?

Usually because the bot, or the program it drives, only runs on Windows: a trading terminal, a desktop application with no API, a browser profile that has to look like a desktop. A bot that is plain code with no such dependency is cheaper and simpler on Linux; our Telegram-bot page sizes that case.

Can I run a Discord or Telegram bot on it?

Yes. Both are ordinary long-running programs; they need nothing from Windows in particular and will run on the smallest size. If the bot moves large files, size for the transfer allowance rather than the memory.

Is web scraping or browser automation allowed?

Running a browser under your own control is allowed. What is not allowed is the same as everywhere else on this site and is written in the terms: abuse of other people's systems, spam, credential stuffing, anything unlawful. If in doubt, ask before you deploy, and we will answer plainly.

Is there a free trial?

No. In the cities billed by the hour you can deploy, run the bot for an evening, destroy the machine and pay for those hours, which is the honest version of a trial.

Can I add more bots later?

Yes. The simplest way is a second machine; the machine you have keeps running while the new one is built. The plan pages list the sizes above yours in the same city.
