DS-5 is the specialist of the range. The 7950X3D stacks additional L3 cache on one of its core complexes, which is worth a great deal to workloads whose working set nearly fits in cache — databases with hot indexes, game servers, simulation — and worth very little to workloads that stream through memory. Buy it for the cache, or buy DS-6 instead.

What DS-5 is the right machine for.

Sixteen full cores with 3D V-Cache, 128 GB and 3.84 TB of NVMe.

Cache-sensitive databases
Query paths that hit the same indexes repeatedly benefit from the larger L3 more than from extra threads.
Game server hosting
High clocks on full cores plus a large cache is the combination that keeps tick rates flat under player load.
Simulation and modelling
Tight loops over a working set that fits in cache run measurably faster here than on a conventional part.

Questions

About DS-5 specifically.

Is the extra cache on all sixteen cores?
No. The part has two core complexes and the additional cache sits on one of them, so scheduling matters: cache-sensitive work belongs on the cached complex. If pinning processes is not something you want to think about, DS-6 is the simpler machine.
Does it need a special operating system?
No. Every image we support runs on it. Current Linux kernels are aware of the asymmetric layout, and you can pin processes yourself if you want to be explicit about it.
