We can tell you why people choose Amsterdam and what we know about the product. We are not going to convert that into a performance claim we have not measured.

Traffic that comes from everywhere
Amsterdam is one of the densest interconnection points in Europe — AMS-IX has been there since the 1990s and a great many networks are present in the city. For an audience scattered across countries rather than concentrated in one, a well-connected hub often beats a geographically central guess.
Outbound-heavy workloads
Anything that ships a lot of bytes — media, downloads, mirrors, an API with fat responses — cares about how many good paths exist out of the region. Watch the transfer allowance on the plan, though: outbound is what gets counted.
A second EU region beside Frankfurt
Two regions in two countries, both inside the EU, on different routes and different supply. That is a real standby without a second supplier on the invoice or a second jurisdiction to reason about.
Dutch and Benelux businesses
Customers in the Netherlands and Belgium, and a country that is unsurprising to a Benelux procurement team. The Netherlands is also one of the two countries where we build dedicated machines.

Most pages that suggest a second region stop before the awkward part. Here is the awkward part, taken from the same product record the price comes from.

Free

Traffic between your own servers inside Amsterdam, over private networking. It is not counted against the allowance at all, and inbound traffic from anywhere is free on every plan.

Everything you send from Amsterdam to Frankfurt, or to anywhere else outside the region. Allowances run from 1 TB a month on C1-1 up to 20 TB on C20-96. Going over does not cut you off — we get in touch.

Not possible

Changing a running server’s region, or extending private networking across two of them. A move is a snapshot, a fresh deploy and a DNS cutover, and the new machine gets a new IP address.

The practical shape. Put the primary where your users are, keep the standby in the other country, and replicate on a schedule rather than synchronously — the transfer meter and the round trip both reward it. If you need the two halves to talk constantly and cheaply, they belong in one region, not two.

Transfer figures are outbound only. If you are moving a lot of bytes out of Amsterdam, read across the transfer column before you read the price column — that is usually the one that decides the plan.

About the Amsterdam region specifically.

Amsterdam or Frankfurt?
If your users are concentrated in central, southern or eastern Europe, Frankfurt is the more central starting point and is also our default region. If your traffic arrives from a lot of different networks and countries, Amsterdam's interconnection density is the better bet. If you genuinely cannot tell, deploy the smallest plan in both by the hour, measure from where your users are, and keep the winner — that costs a few cents and answers the question properly.
Does being near AMS-IX make my site faster?
Not by itself, and not in any amount we would put a number to. What an interconnection hub gives you is a larger set of networks present in the same place, which tends to mean shorter and more direct paths to more of them. Whether that turns into a difference your users notice depends on their networks, your application and how much of your page is even served from your server. We do not publish who we peer with, so treat the exchange as context about the city rather than a specification of the product.
Can I replicate privately between Amsterdam and Frankfurt?
No. Private networking connects your own servers inside a single region, and that traffic is not counted at all. Anything that crosses between regions goes over the public internet and the outbound side counts against the sending server's transfer allowance. Database replication, off-site backups and rsync jobs between two regions all land in that bucket, so size the allowance for the copy volume before you build the topology.
Can I move an existing server from another region to Amsterdam?
Not in place. A region cannot be changed on a running server, so moving means taking a snapshot, deploying a new instance here from it and cutting DNS over. The new server gets a new IP address, which is the part that catches people out — anything with an IP allow-list on the other side needs updating at the same time. Lower your DNS TTL a day beforehand and the cutover itself is uneventful.
Do you have dedicated servers in the Netherlands?
No. Amsterdam is a cloud region for us, not a place we have metal. Our dedicated machines are built in Germany, and one American build sits in Vint Hill, Virginia — the suppliers behind that line simply do not operate a Dutch facility, and we would rather say so than sell you a country we cannot deliver. If it is the jurisdiction you need rather than the latency, a German machine is inside the same EU legal regime; if it is the latency, a cloud instance in this region is the product that actually runs here.
Is the Netherlands as good as Germany for keeping data in the EU?
For the location question, yes: the Netherlands is an EU member state, so data at rest here is inside the Union in exactly the same sense that data in Frankfurt is. Which of the two you choose is a routing and procurement decision, not a jurisdictional one — and neither region makes you compliant on its own.
