Domains · What they really cost
A $1.49 domain that renews at $40.99 is not a cheap domain.
Every registrar advertises the first year. We publish the renewal beside it, for all 472 extensions we sell, because the second number is the one you will pay for as long as you own the name.

The same question, asked properly
Cheapest over three years — which is a different list.
First year plus two renewals. Nobody keeps a domain for one year, so this is the number that decides, and almost none of the extensions above appear here.

The exception
Of 472 extensions, exactly one never changes price.
Everything else on this page is a first-year price that becomes a different number. These do not.
.com — $13.49 to register, $13.49 to renew
The same price in year one and in year ten. It is not the cheapest first year on this page and it does not need to be: over any period longer than about eighteen months it beats most of the offers above, and you never have to check what it became.
Where the money actually goes. The registry sets both prices and every registrar pays the same. The only thing a shop controls is its margin and whether it shows you the renewal before you pay. Ours are generated from the registrar’s live cost table through one arithmetic function, which is why the search box, the cart and the invoice cannot disagree. All 472 extensions are listed here.
