What the money buys is the thing that is hard to get elsewhere — a dedicated machine in the United States whose traffic is not metered at all, with no allowance and no overage line on the invoice. For workloads that are mostly bytes rather than compute, it is the obvious machine.

An offsite backup target: Mirrored disks, an unmetered port and a fixed bill. Point rsync, Borg or your database dumps at it every night and stop budgeting for egress.

About DS-7 specifically.

Why is traffic unmetered here but metered on most VPS plans?

Different platforms with different economics. The virtual platform shares its uplinks between many tenants, so most plans allocate transfer and count it. These machines come from the supplier with a port of their own that is simply not metered — no allowance, no overage — and we pass that through unchanged. The 0.5 Gbit port speed is the only ceiling.

Is it really 4 TB?

Raw, yes — two 2 TB drives. They arrive as a software mirror, so usable space is about 2 TB and one drive can fail without losing data. A mirror is not a backup: it will faithfully replicate a deletion to both drives.

What is a 2017 CPU still good for?

Moving and storing bytes. The E3-1270 v6 holds 3.8 GHz across its four cores, which is plenty for a backup target, a file origin or a relay — the jobs this machine is priced for. If the workload is compute, DS-9 or the European lineup is money better spent.
